FormFactor

Project Summary

PINT helped FormFactor transform its web presence with the ultimate goals of increasing lead generation from prospective customers and improving the user experience of the corporate website for other key audience groups. From a design perspective, the FormFactor website needed clearer and more direct calls to action, improved navigation, and better content accessibility. PINT’s UX Designer and Creative Director worked with FormFactor through an iterative design process to achieve these outcomes. From a technical execution perspective, the original site’s hosting infrastructure was not optimized for performance and there was an overreliance on too many third-party dependencies, which also slowed the site down. PINT migrated to an optimal hosting infrastructure and optimized the code of the site to significantly improve site speed and user experience as detailed below in the results section.

Challenge

FormFactor reached out to PINT seeking to transform the look and feel of the FormFactor corporate website and accomplish the following goals:

  • Update the website to a modern look and feel and match the company’s revised branding
  • Improve website messaging to be clear and concise
  • Improve the navigation of the website
  • Increase lead generation from the corporate website
  • Improve performance (site speed)
  • Improve the accessibility of content

Solution

In order to meet the key goals of the project of increasing lead generation and improving the user experience of the website for other key audience groups, PINT began the project with a Discovery and Information Architecture Phase. This phase started with stakeholder interviews and a survey to dive deep into key areas of the website such as the products mega menu, insite search functionality, and content downloads. Once the inputs from these activities were learned, PINT revised the structure and layout of the website and presented to FormFactor stakeholders in the form of a new site map and wireframes for key pages of the website. Upon these information architecture deliverables being approved, PINT designed a new look and feel to modernize the site and appeal to key audience groups. The design underwent several iterations to best explore the look and feel and reach the best solution for integrating the new branding into the website design.

Once design was approved, development activities began. PINT recommended and configured a new WP Engine hosting environment, which was significantly more performant than FormFactor’s previous hosting environment. Once the new hosting environment was configured, PINT migrated reusable elements of the current site and developed new functionality for the site as specified in the design phase. The new FormFactor website was built in a stage environment and rigorously tested across a browser and device matrix during the quality assurance phase by the PINT team. The transition to the new site was seamless with no downtime for end users.

Results

Since the launch of the website, there has been a significant increase in qualified form submissions and other key metrics- evidence that the changes made to the site throughout the project achieved the intended outcome. In the six months after the new website launched compared to the six months prior to launch, Sessions increased by 27% and Users increased by 32%.

The updated website is also significantly more performant. Migrating to WP Engine’s optimized infrastructure as well as the code level optimizations that PINT wrote, made the new FormFactor website significantly faster. The table below shows key performance metrics that were measured on the old website before the project started and on the new website after launch. All of the performance metrics improved significantly as shown in the chart below, which directly and positively impacts the user experience of the FormFactor website.

Metric Before After %Change
Overall Performance 54/100 96/100 78%
First Contentful Paint 1.0s 0.8s 20%
Speed Index 3.1s 0.8s 74%
Largest Contentful Paint 2.4s 1.4s 42%
